Durante minha estadia nos Estados Unidos para participar do programa Ylai, tive a chance de visitar a Robert H. Smith School of Business na Universidade de Maryland. Essa visita foi parte do meu percurso pelo programa, e fui recepcionado por um anfitrião responsável pelas atividades locais.

A escola de negócios me impressionou bastante. Como brasileiro, eu naturalmente presto atenção aos aspectos estruturais, arquitetônicos e de conservação dos lugares que visito. E, nesse e em diversos outros sentidos, a escola se destacou positivamente. O edifício estava muito bem conservado durante a minha visita que aconteceu em um período entre semestres letivos, quando havia menos atividades acadêmicas e aulas. Ainda assim, essa experiência foi incrivelmente enriquecedora.

Tive a oportunidade de explorar não apenas a escola de negócios, mas também diversas áreas do campus universitário. Essa imersão no ambiente acadêmico contribuiu significativamente para o meu desenvolvimento durante o programa, proporcionando uma visão abrangente e valiosa do cenário educacional e empresarial nos Estados Unidos.

One standout aspect of my experience was the exceptional assistance I received from my recruitment advisor, Kelcey Coleman. This is a review of the General Business Minor at the RHS School of Business.

For anyone considering adding a business minor, I would not recommend. All the general business minor classes have been moved to an online asynchronous lecture format. That's fine if that is what you are looking for, but there is minimal engagement and involvement as a direct consequence. I enjoyed having the classes be in-person and getting to talk to the faculty.

One would think that the elective requirement is supposed to get one exposure to other interesting in-person classes in the business school, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The "elective" requirement provides an illusion of choice. For most elective classes, one has to sit through a long waitlist or holdfile for the chance of being able to take a class that one would be interested in to advance their career interests. It boils down to a single online asynchronous lecture class about supply chains.

I was excited to start this program and learn in an in-person environment. I did enjoy the time I spent, but with the format of the minor abruptly changing, I don't recognize this program anymore. Most people I talk to in the minor don't seem to care anymore and are simply taking the class to shuffle through a sunk-cost fallacy.

At the end of the day, if you want an online asynchronous class system with minimal involvement with your peers or faculty, then this is the program for you.

I recently graduated from Smith and a scholarship was repealed creating a balance on my account. After reaching out to the financial aid office, they said that it was likely an error on behalf of the Smith school.

I have been calling the Smith school department of accounting and finance for 3 days in a row to resolve the issue. All calls and emails have gone unanswered. Their website says their top "core value" is service.... ironic. Quite a way to treat your new alumni after spending immense amounts on graduate tuition.
