What an absolute treasure Sapelo Island is for the state of georgia. I have had an interest in getting on the island for a few years with the opportunity never presented itself until recently. I saw this past weekend that we actually had the pleasure of being able to spend some time on the island. We were the guests of the UGAMI staff. Which is the University of Georgia Marine Institute. They are a group of scientists professors researchers students and other faculty members that study the marshlands waterways and island. With The Limited time we spent on the water we were able to see a variety of marine life. We saw alligator a variety of fish and crabs as well as dolphin. The works they do they're not only have local impact but also worldwide impact. What a great group of people and what fantastic work they do at the facility. The University of Georgia campus on the island is actually the old Reynolds Plantation dairy farm, which has been undergoing a transformation into what it has become today. We met a wonderful group of people who are called the friends UGAMI. A very active and concerned group of citizens who put in the hard work to care for and keep up with many of the needs required at the facility. We were also able to take a bike ride around the island to the lighthouse as well as out to hog hammocks the community that has existed on the island for hundreds of years. The Gullah Geechee are longtime inhabitants of the island who still now hold a small foothold in population on the island. The island is really just a natural beauty surrounded by marshlands. You will be hard-pressed to find more beautiful sunsets than the ones available on Sapelo. We definitely enjoyed our visit to the island and look forward to returning again very soon. The hospitality we received was second to none and made for a wonderful getaways for the weekend.

This is one of my favorite places to go visit in the United States. I wouldn't hear many many years ago on a project for the Oprah Winfrey show in fell in love with the island. I actually got to meet Mama Bailey when she was living and she gave me a permanent pass to come so I know her entire family and I go as often as I can. I was giving an opportunity to purchase property on the island but I didn't at the time. Now I wish I would have. It is a great place but to really get to know sapelo Island you have to know the indigenous people. You have to go to hog hammock and meet the Bailey's and really get to know him and you'll really understand the island. The island is changing because it's now allowing people to purchase land there and it's really taking away a lot of the beauty of it

Best vacation we have had in years. Spent 5 days exploring the beaches, the trails on the north end and everything we could find. I hate to tell people how much we love it because I don't want anyone else going, it's selfish but true. Pack your bags wisely and truly get away from it all

The planning to get to the Island can be tricky, but it's affordable round trip ferry fee. We used a private tour company to tour the Island to learn the history. Next time I want to go to explore the nature!

Sapelo Island is a beautiful peaceful community. The island is home to a small Black community of about 60 or so residents who can trace their roots directly back to slaves who lived and toiled on Sapelo. The island is also home to some UGA research labs and DNR posts. It costs me $5 to take the ferry to the island ($5 round trip ). You have the option of either taking a tour of the island, renting a golf cart to drive around the island yourself, or simply walking along the island. I recommend the tour because the island is vast, and seems very hard to navigate if you do not live there. I recommend tours by Mr. JR Grovner! He is a lifelong resident of the island, and gave an informative fun tour. My group was taken to historical sites on the island and the beach for a reasonable price. JR is not only very knowledgeable about the history of the island, but also keeps the tour very engaging, and works to actively conserve the island for the residents that live there. I felt like I really got my money's worth with his tour, and was happily exhausted when we were finished. There were tourists from all over the U.S. at Sapelo, I noticed people from Nebraska, Tennessee, Atlanta, and students from UGA. The atmosphere of the island was very serene, and the beach was one of the most clean and comfortable beaches I have ever seen The island also has some interesting wildlife. If you ever get the chance to experience this island, do it!! Make sure to have the experience with J.R. too, as you would be supporting the locals of the island. Everyone in my tour group was great company!

A beautiful and unique Georgia barrier island, rich with history, friendly people, shell-filled beaches, and trails filled with saw palmetto and Spanish moss covered trees. Pack your own food in, rent a golf cart to get around, and explore to your heart's content.

Beautiful beaches and the history is remarkable. Be sure to visit the lighthouse. Saw a huge bald eagle nest but couldn't see if there were occupants. Yvonne was a fantastic tour guide.
