I apologize for the "untimeliness" of this review. It is about a great man, not a courthouse or jury pool. I have had over five years to think of the perfect review, and it looks like fate might have pushed my hand.

In May of 2017, I got my jury duty notice. I reported as required, dressed appropriately as the jury notice I received in the mail stated. (Appropriate attire required: no jeans, shorts, gym clothes, etc.) I followed the check-in procedures and declined the $20 bill provided for lunch. I took a seat among the other pool members.

I remember feeling out of place, as many of the people around me were dressed in casual clothing, such as Walmart pajamas or hunting gear from Cabela's. I shuffled around from seat to seat as the morning hours passed.

Shortly after 1:00 pm, Judge William Davis, the Cecil County Circuit Court Associate Judge, came to the jury pool waiting room and announced that the court had selected all the jurors needed for the day's docket. He thanked everyone for their time waiting.

I thought to myself, "Only a great man would do that!" I then noticed that I was the only person in the room of more than 35 people who was looking at Judge Davis. Everyone else was looking at their watches, phones, or the fresh $20 bill they had received earlier.

I felt ashamed that my fellow county residents did not show the judge the proper respect. More importantly, I realized that none of them likely considered the efforts Judge Davis had expended to become the county's first Black judge and the youngest to serve on the circuit court.

I had the opportunity to meet Judge Davis a few times, but I never told him this story. I had several opportunities to do so at charity events my wife and I attended, but I was afraid of embarrassing either of us. The best reason is that I grew up on Cleveland's Southeast side, where seeing a judge was never a good thing.

As time passed, I continued to tell the story of this great man and judge, particularly the one about when I stopped an acquaintance from embarrassing himself. He started bashing Judge Davis about his divorce ruling, and I had to let him know that Judge Davis is a fair man and that the acquaintance's problems were likely self-inflicted by his own poor life choices.

Most recently, on October 17, 2022, I was having breakfast at a local hotel. The young lady making my scrambled eggs and cheese, whose name was "T," began to speak of a great judge who had gone out of his way to help her young family member who was working through some challenges. I stopped her before she was able to tell me the name of the judge.

You see, I knew she was talking about Judge Davis because Cecil County only has one great one: the Honorable Judge Will Davis!
