Good bread and milk store. Cashiers are not too polite or friendly....just saying. If you don't like your job, someone else might.

I can understand some of the grievances others have aired but as someone who has lived in Machias, this is my favorite grocery store Downeast. Certainly 5 stars respective to my experiences in rural and/or food desert type areas. I would probably pick here or Walmart in Ellsworth for most of my shopping. I need to eat gluten free, and the options Downeast are meager, but the two Shop n Saves (Bayside and Four Corners) seem to have the best options and the least traffic compared to the Ellsworth Walmart or Hannaford in Machias. I love the little built in coffee shop.

One of the male workers stares at not only me, my wife, and other customers in a very inappropriate and unsettling way. He has even followed us around the store and increasingly becomes creepy and inappropriate with the staring. He does this in such a way that gives off the impression that he has some really disturbing thoughts about people. I'm not ok with me and my wife being made uncomfortable every time this individual is in the store.

A female worker who goes out for carts is constantly smoking out around the parking lot and while pushing carts. Customers are clearly around, coming and going, but it does not seem to be a concern for this worker. I don't personally like to have that smell as part of my shopping experience and it is inconsiderate to other people, especially the customers.

The quality of the food is also very poor, as well as the prices. I have seen produce clearly in poor condition: moldy fruits in packaging on the shelves, prepacked items that are clearly turning bad, vegetables that have turned bad but are still being kept on shelves next to good vegetables. I consistently find this to be the quality everytime I'm in the store.

The deli has good sandwiches but I worry about how old the food is and the conditions it's prepared in. When I buy the pre-sliced deli meats/cheeses, the cheese goes bad EXTREMELY fast and the meats look discolored and slimy. I've worked in a deli and cheese that goes bad within days to a week means the conditions in which it's being handled, stored or the surfaces it's sliced on is very unsanitary or it is very old product. I do not have issues with this at other stores that have the Freshly Sliced options available.

The meat (beef, chicken, pork) does not seem as fresh as it should be. Prepacked items like ground chicken/turkey, mashed potatoes, mac n' cheese, etc., you can see a lot of liquid build up from being frozen and unthawed, some products looky chunky/gritty and off color, or a mixture of both.

As convenient as this store is to shop at locally, I cannot justify continuing to shop here when I can get a better customer experience at other stores in Machias, Ellsworth or Brewer/Bangor. I know the quality control is better, the fresh selections are fresher, and my wife and I will not have a male worker uncomfortably and inappropriately staring at us.

I gave one star because at least the pizza is decent.
